Mushroom News Editorial Policy
The Editorial Board authorizes the following policy statement effective January 1998: Mushroom News invites
submission of original, unpublished, technical and practical articles on all aspects of mushroom culture -
growing, management, marketing, packaging and processing. Mushroom News also considers reprinting
articles and information of importance to the industry from other publications after obtaining permission.
The Editorial Board determines the suitability of articles submitted for publication, edits articles to conform to
the Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual and recommends content alterations to authors. Board
decisions include timing of the publication and final layout of text, photos, charts and other graphics, although
suggestions will be considered. The Board recommends that citations, footnotes and references follow the
style of the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS). Citations and references should be specifically
cogent to text.
All assertions in original manuscripts must be supported by empirical or experimental data. Charts, graphs
and photos must be clear and supportive of the text.
Subjective, undocumented or ad-like copy will be rejected. A well-written article with a company by-line is a
powerful endorsement for that company, its people and products.
Authors are urged to be familiar with our publication. The editors will work with those who may not have
previously published articles, but have interesting ideas to present to the industry.
Article length varies according to subject matter. Most technical and practical articles average four to five
printed pages including illustrations. A two-column page in Mushroom News without headlines, illustrations or
ads runs approximately 850 words.
Science and Technology Guidelines
Mushroom News publishes a series of peer-reviewed scientific articles entitled, "Science and Technology"
which deals with all aspects of adaptive and basic research on edible mushrooms. Papers to be published in
this category are reviewed for scope, merit, originality and style by a panel of scientists knowledgeable in the
discipline. Only those research papers judged to be of the highest quality and scientific merit will be accepted
for publication.
Since the inception of the series in January 1996, seventeen papers have been reviewed. Researchers from
Argentina, Canada, England and the United States have published works on topics that range from pest
control to spent mushroom substrate (SMS) disposal.
We hope the original papers presented in the Science and Technology series help scientists working in the
field share information and help growers improve production techniques.
