2010-2011 Mushroom Crop Report Released

All Mushroom Sales Exceed $1 Billion in Value
Sales of the 2010-11 U.S. mushroom crop are 862 million pounds, up 9 percent from the 2009-10 season. Value of sales for the 2010-11 U.S. mushroom crop is $1.02 billion, up 10 percent from the previous season. The number of growers, at 282, is down 35 from last season. The average price is $1.18 per pound, up 1 cent from 2009-10.
Volume of sales reported by growers of Agaricus mushrooms for fresh market is 724 million pounds, up 8 percent from the 2009-10 season. Volume of sales of Agaricus mushrooms for processing is 121 million pounds, up 13 percent from last season. Value of sales for all Agaricus mushrooms totaled $952 million, up 8 percent from the previous year.
Agaricus Mushrooms
Agaricus mushroom volume of sales totaled 845 million pounds, up 9 percent from the 2009-10 season. Pennsylvania accounted for 65 percent of the total volume of sales and second-ranked California contributed 14 percent. The value of the Agaricus crop was estimated at $966 million, up 9 percent from the 2009-10 season. Brown mushrooms, including Portabello and Crimini varieties, accounted for 137 million pounds, up 14 percent from last season. Brown mushrooms accounted for 16 percent of the total Agaricus volume sold. The brown mushroom crop value of sales for the 2010-11 season is 20 percent of the total Agaricus value.
The total number of Agaricus growers in the U.S., at 110, is 1 more grower than last season. Growers with sales exceeding 10 million pounds accounted for 74 percent of U.S. Agaricus production, or 629 million pounds. The number of growers by sales categories is as follows:
10.0 million to 19.9 million pounds, 20 growers;
5.0 million to 9.9 million pounds, 11 growers;
2.5 million to 4.9 million pounds, 25 growers;
1.0 million to 2.4 million pounds, 24 growers;
0.5 million to 1.0 million pounds, 3 growers;
less than 0.5 million pounds of sales, 17 growers.
The growing area is 26.9 million square feet, virtually unchanged from the previous season. Total fillings are 133 million square feet, virtually unchanged from last season. Yields averaged 6.32 pounds per square foot, up slightly from last season. Producers received an average return of $7.23 per square foot, up 39 cents from last season.
U.S. fresh market production at 724 million pounds, up 8 percent from the previous season, while processed production, at 121 million pounds, is 13 percent above the previous season. Growers reported U.S. fresh market production at 86 percent of total sales volume with processed production making up the remaining 14 percent. Grower total filling intentions for the 2011-12 crop are 134 million square feet, virtually unchanged from the total fillings in the 2010-11 season.
The 61 growers of Agaricus mushrooms in Chester County, Pennsylvania produced 402 million pounds of Agaricus mushrooms valued at $365 million. The growing area in Chester County was 12.9 million square feet. Total fillings were 61.3 million square feet.
Specialty Mushrooms - Shiitake, Oyster, and all Other Exotics
Value of sales for commercially grown specialty mushrooms in 2010-11 is $50.1 million, up 27 percent from the 2009-10 season. A specialty grower is defined as having at least 200 natural wood logs in production or some commercial indoor growing area, and $200 dollars or more in sales. The average price per pound received by growers, at $2.97, is up 41 cents from the previous season.
Volume of sales of Shiitake mushrooms totaled 6.42 million pounds for the 2010-11 season. Price per pound received by growers, at $2.99 per pound, is up 24 cents from 2009-10. Sales volume of Oyster mushrooms, at 7.7 million pounds. Price per pound received by growers, at $2.37 per pound, is down 23 cents from the previous season. Volume of Sales of exotic mushrooms, other than Shiitake or Oyster, is 2.74 million pounds. Price per pound received by growers, at $4.58 per pound, is up $2.40 from 2009-10.
Certified Organic Agaricus and Specialty Mushrooms
Growers produced 31.2 million pounds of mushrooms that were certified organic during the 2010-11 growing season, 4 percent above 2009-10. Out of the 31.2 million pounds, 17.6 million pounds, or 57 percent of the total were sold as certified organic mushrooms, while the rest were sold without the certified organic label. This percentage is equal to the 2009-10 crop year. Agaricus mushrooms accounted for 67 percent of the mushrooms sold as certified organic, while all specialty mushrooms made up the remainder. These certified organic sales represent 2 percent of the 2010-11 total mushroom sales. The number of certified organic mushroom growers totaled 46, down five growers from the previous season. These growers represent 16 percent of the 282 total mushroom producers.
