The Community Awareness Committee (CAC) of the American Mushroom Institute addresses the challenges of the
mushroom industry in southeastern Pennsylvania with the goal of maintaining its viability. CAC represents the local industry
with a united voice by providing information in matters of common interest before local and state government bodies
and regulatory agencies. CAC fosters a better understanding between the local community and the mushroom
industry.
CAC provides educational materials to local schools and community groups and is involved with minority programs
including tutoring, literacy and health services. CAC created the video," The Quiet Giant," that gives a history and
overview of the local Chester County industry. The committee sponsors many local teachers to attend Ag Awareness
classes at Penn State University each year and raises money for scholarships for local high school students through
an annual golf tournament. CAC conducts speakers' bureaus and farm tours.
